Understanding Endurance conditioning

Endurance and conditioning programs help patients rebuild the stamina lost during illness, hospitalization, or prolonged inactivity. Deconditioning — the loss of cardiovascular and muscular fitness — can happen quickly and affects a patient's ability to perform even basic daily tasks without excessive fatigue.

Physical therapists design graduated programs that safely increase activity tolerance, improve cardiovascular efficiency, and restore the energy levels needed for meaningful participation in daily life. Progress is monitored through vital signs, exertion scales, and functional benchmarks.

What Endurance Training Involves

Programs include progressive walking, stationary activities, interval training, and functional tasks performed at increasing duration and intensity. Therapists monitor heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and perceived exertion to ensure exercise remains safe and productive.

Building Stamina at Home

Walk a little farther or a little longer each day as your therapist recommends. Break activities into smaller segments with rest periods. Stay hydrated and eat regular meals to fuel recovery. Track your progress to stay motivated — even small gains matter.

When to Contact Your Care Team

Contact your therapist if you feel more fatigued rather than improving, experience chest pain or unusual shortness of breath during activity, or notice your heart rate taking longer to recover after exercise. Seek emergency care for chest pain, severe dizziness, or fainting during physical activity.
