Symptom support alongside curative care

Understanding Symptom support alongside curative care
Palliative symptom management focuses on improving quality of life for patients living with serious, complex, or progressive illnesses. Unlike hospice care, palliative nursing can be provided alongside curative treatments and is appropriate at any stage of illness. Private duty nurses specializing in palliative care help manage pain, nausea, shortness of breath, anxiety, and other symptoms that can significantly diminish a patient's daily comfort and function.
The goal of palliative symptom management is not to cure the underlying disease but to ensure that symptoms are controlled as effectively as possible. This requires ongoing assessment, close collaboration with the prescribing physician, and attentive communication with the patient and family about goals, preferences, and comfort measures.
What to Expect
Your nurse will assess symptoms at each shift using validated pain and symptom scales, monitor the effectiveness of prescribed comfort measures, and communicate with your physician when adjustments are needed. Palliative care is individualized — your nurse will work with you and your family to understand what matters most to the patient and tailor care accordingly.
Comfort and Quality of Life
Effective symptom control often involves a combination of medication management, positioning techniques, breathing exercises, and environmental adjustments such as lighting and noise reduction. Your nurse will also support emotional well-being by providing a consistent, compassionate presence and connecting your family with social work, counseling, or spiritual care resources when desired.
When to Contact Your Care Team
Contact your care team if the patient's pain or other symptoms are not adequately controlled with current medications, if new symptoms develop, or if the patient or family wishes to discuss changes in care goals. Call 911 if the patient experiences sudden severe pain, acute respiratory distress, uncontrolled bleeding, or any life-threatening emergency — unless a do-not-resuscitate order or advance directive specifies otherwise.
